Our Glühwein Mix and how to get the best out of it
Unlike mass produced Glühwein mixes, ours takes a little more effort than simply dropping a teabag in hot wine. But trust us, it is definitely worth it.
We use 9 high quality spices in our mix, and we are sure you will find that we have the balance just right.
Of course, Glühwein has a vital ingredient that we don’t supply: the wine. We do, however, have some recommendations for you. The Mix pack contains sufficient ingredients for 3 liters of wine. We recommend that you use the 3 liter happy box of the Robertson Winery Natural Sweet Red or the Robertson Winery Merlot. Our personal preference is actually a 50:50 blend of the two, but then you would need two mix packs. Then again, what is wrong with that?
The procedure to prepare your Glühwein is as follows:
- Pour your 3 liters of wine into a pot.
- Add the Mix to the wine.
- Slice up one sweet orange and add it to the pot WITHOUT the peel. Leaving the peel on gives a slightly bitter aftertaste.
- Stir well and then leave to stand for 2 hours or so.
- Heat the wine to between 75 & 80oC for 30 minutes. DO NOT BOIL! Otherwise you will lose most of the alcohol.
- Strain the Glühwein through a sieve into mugs. 3 liters should be enough for 8-9 mugs.
- Add one tea spoon of honey to each mug.
- Stir and enjoy.
